Eurovelo 15 in Netherlands

Julia Filer2025-05-11 16:38:31
We are planning to take our tandem across to the Netherlands next month and have 4 days to get from the Hook of Holland to Dusseldorf.  I was considering using the Eurovelo 15 route in reverse. Has anyone done this and is it an interesting/pretty route? The other two NL national cycle route options go further south near Nijmegan or even further south through Eindhoven. It doesn't make a lot of difference in time/distance so would appreciate anyone's experience of the routes and where is worth seeing. Thanks

We've ridden the section from HvH to Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Biesbosch nationale park as far as Woudrichem as this is also the Maas/Meuse route 19, then deviated to go south eventually to Maastricht and onwards. We found it to be a good quiet route. Quite a few abbeys and Dordrecht is very pretty. Rotterdam was cool going over the Erasmus brug. There is a few points in the Biesbosch np where it loops about that are nice but in hindsight may have added distance. The bit from Wijk bij Duurstede through Arnhem is really nice. On this route I went to the operation market garden museum which was good. There are also lots of alternative options for routes including the heuvelrug which is a hilly area between Utrecht and Arnhem/. Have a good trip

Watch out for big groups of e-bile tourers coming the other way!

Having just bought our first tandem 2 weeks ago I can't add about cycling the route. But, we walked part of the route in February. We walked through the world heritage site of Kinderdijk, trying to keep off the EV15, but had to venture onto the cycle route when footpaths totally disappeared and we had to join a shared route. We loved the ferry from Krimpen aan de Lek. We also walked alongside various other sections near Rotterdam. Enjoy your journey.

(By the way, we are loving our tandem. We have only done four 12-mile trips out so far, but it's fantastic)

Margaret Dean - would be good to see you at a rally soon with your tandem. How about the International rally in the Netherlands? Don't worry about how far or fast you cycle. There are all abilities at a rally and it would be chance to meet other tandemists and see the Netherlands at the same time.

Re Arnhem - well worth a visit. Would recommend this campsite. https://www.oosterbeeksrijnoever.nl/camping/

Also this campsite if you go in that direction.

There is also a waterbus from Rotterdam to Dordrecht that is fun to take and cuts out some of the city riding. www.waterbus.nl

If you take the Waterbus, get off at Kinderdijk and cycle past the windmills!  Buy a single ticket online. An excellent idea from Sally.

I am new to TC and am very tempted to go to the International rally in NL is there any other accomodation there that is not tented? We have an old style Dawes Discovery twin 531 tubing which has done a few sportives. Would be have would be travelling from Hertfordshire UK to the Hoek.

Hi Joanne

The TCI rally information under events on this website advises that there are hotels and B&Bs nearby. There might be cabins on the campground as most seem to have them. Best contact the campground directly although the booking form might have that option can't remember. I am sure there are others attending who will be more able to give more comprehensive information.

Hi Joanne

just had a quick look at the camp ground website and it appears that there is other non tent accomodation available

https://www.heksenlaak.nl/accommodaties/stacaravan.html

Website is in Dutch but if you phone them I am sure they will be able to help. Most Dutch people speak excellent English especially in a customer facing tourism role.

if you have never cycled in the Netherlands before, you should give it a go it is a delightful experience.

Thank you for all the thoughts and recommendations, we will definitely try and fit in as many as we can (The operation market garden museum has already caught John's eye!). Unfortunately we won't make the international rally as we committed 2 years ago to going to Berlin but we hope it goes well.

Joanne - re the International Rally

We are driving to Harwich and leaving the car on someone's drive arranged through JustPark, then crossing with the Bendings, with whom we are sharing a chalet, to the Hook of Holland and cycling from there over four days. The Bendings are courageously cycling from home to Harwich! Bob B has planned the route to the rally while I have planned a largely different route back to the Hook of Holland which includes parts of the alternative Rhine route and Kinderdijk.

Some great info here thank you. I'm going to be dropping the car at Harwich and then cycling to Barchem, but haven't worked out a route yet - most probably 2 full days of cycling and the same back. Due to constraints on holiday time hoping to catch the overnight ferry on the Friday at 23.00 and making the journey Sat & Sun. Riding back Fri and Sat and then the daytime ferry on Sunday. Very open to suggested routes - I've cycled something similar years ago with Mark Waters via Arnhem (the museum and cemetery are must go), but all of the cycle tracks in NL are amazing.....if anyone else is doing something similar pls shout, but open to any route suggestions. Lots of EV2 could work but also like the Waterbus idea from Rotterdam which would necessitate a different route....best David
